Front Yard Design

This Summer’s Front Yard Design Trends

The pandemic is subsiding and people are beginning to get together again.  Did you use the lockdown time to reimagine your front yard?  If not, there are plenty of quick and easy ways to spruce up your house to get it ready for when friends come knocking once again.

  • Edge your lawn. One of the most effective ways to make your front yard design look tidy is to pull out that edger and clean up the boundaries.  Anywhere turf grass is adjacent to paving, planting beds, or structures should be the focus of your efforts.
  • Edge your beds. While you’re at it, add definition to your planting beds with an attractive edging material, such as stone or unit block.  This will have the added benefit of preventing turf grass from growing into the beds, as well.
  • Find a seasonal bloomer. Shrubs that are in bloom are great for filling bare spots in planting beds or placing anywhere a nice focal point is needed in your front yard design.  Check the plant’s needs against your growing conditions before making a selection to ensure it thrives in its new home.
  • Boulder on. If you don’t have a green thumb or find plants too much work, add boulders to your landscape beds.  Upkeep on boulders is nearly zilch but the look creates interest and focal points throughout your landscape’s front yard design.
  • Add some interest. Create symmetry and interest at your front porch with some easy-to-find elements such as planters, rocking chairs, unique sculptures, or a pretty garland made of local and seasonal greenery.  These elements not only add color, but also a sense of warmth and welcoming to your front stoop.
  • Light it up. Don’t put all your effort into things you can only see in the daytime.  Adding up lighting at trees, solar lights along pathways, or net lights across the ceiling of your front porch creates drama and a sense of someone being home.  Even a couple carriage lights framing a doorway provides a welcoming look at night and a cozy appearance to your front yard design.
  • Update the hardscape. If you have pavers that are heaving up, perhaps it’s time for a refresh.  Lift the pavers and compact the base courses below to help them lie flat once again.  Give the pavers a good pressure wash out in the driveway, too, before placing them back down and brooming in jointing sand.  Or, look at upgrading your front yard hardscape design with more modern materials such as large format pavers, sleek stepstones, or a crushed granite.
  • Layer it. If your house is set way back, create new beds closer to the road to break up the expanse.  Float an island bed where it seems appropriate or anchor it to a walkway or driveway.  Use a few upright plants to frame the view beyond.

I have used SB evolution landscape for 2 years, since purchase of my first home. I am very pleased with their service, from routine maintenance to clearing an entire hillside and planting a series of hydrangeas in a shady spot for me, as they are my favorite flower. They are very responsive to emails and phone calls and have given me a bouquet of flowers on completion of both bigger projects. Plus, my roses, orange trees, bamboo, callalillies, begonia and all other plants are so much healthier than when I purchased this property. Thank you Evolution!
