Planters:  Gardening on the Go

Neophyte and experienced gardeners alike have discovered something that has changed the way we manage plants in our landscapes.  Planters are rising dramatically in popularity as property owners discover the flexibility, beauty, and simplicity they offer.  The mobility of planters is probably one of the greatest advantages they offer, particularly for the fussy gardener who monitors the effects of sun and temperatures on plants.  Similarly, the homesteader likes being able to keep potted herbs near the kitchen door for easy harvesting during meal prep.  And for the urban gardener, planters offer a way to bring greenery onto patios and porches, or even balconies and fire escapes.

So, what exactly does one grow in a planter?  Well, with the wide range of sizes available, the answer is almost anything.  No longer are gardeners limited to just annuals and seasonal selections.  Small citrus trees and vegetables grown in pots make the world of edible gardening available and accessible to just about everyone.  Larger planters, naturally, can be home to larger plants, too.  Even palms, giant succulents, and ornamental trees can live happily in a planter, especially as doing so makes their care and watering much easier.  The special conditions required of more extreme plants like cacti and tropicals suddenly become easier to provide, as well, as particular soils and growing medium can purchased in smaller, more affordable quantities.

The planters themselves are the delight of the home gardener, offering a wide range of styles and materials.  Classic terra cotta, a typical go-to for containerized planting, remains popular as it provides warmth and a sense of durability that are a suitable complement to the Spanish Colonial styles of Southern California.  But terra cotta itself is available in a variety of looks, from the sleek styling of simple contemporary forms to the intricacy of pots adorned with ornate detailing of rosettes and garlands, there is a pot for every taste.

Concrete, too, offers the same versatility for every style, from modern to antique looks.  Concrete offers the added intrigue of a wide range of colors and finishes, while providing the superior durability one would expect of the material.  With concrete, almost any form is possible.  Small urns might be just right for small spaces, while larger concrete planters fit the bill for streetscapes and can even be used to create a layer of security around buildings.

Back at home, container gardening isn’t limited to the planters available at the local garden center.  The creative gardener will find all sorts of items that might be repurposed into a planter.  Old tires, wooden palettes, and wheelbarrows make for unique conversation pieces in the garden while playing host to bright flowers and small shrubs.  For more traditional tastes, a lined basket, old pottery, or even a watering can also be used to create a small garden.  No matter the material or size, planters have proven to be a major player in getting gardeners of all abilities to grow more than they probably once thought possible.

I have used SB evolution landscape for 2 years, since purchase of my first home. I am very pleased with their service, from routine maintenance to clearing an entire hillside and planting a series of hydrangeas in a shady spot for me, as they are my favorite flower. They are very responsive to emails and phone calls and have given me a bouquet of flowers on completion of both bigger projects. Plus, my roses, orange trees, bamboo, callalillies, begonia and all other plants are so much healthier than when I purchased this property. Thank you Evolution!
