Landscaper Jorge Cortez: Why Gopher Wire Is Important To The Santa Barbara Landscape
Video Transcription
Hi, I’m Jorge Cortez with Santa Barbara Evolution Landscape. Here, in beautiful Santa Barbara, today we’re working on a landscape installation. As you can see, we have a wide variety of plants that are fairly drought tolerant. And Francisco here, he’s backfilling the holes, mixing it with the planting soil and existing soil. In order, to install the plantspeoperly. As you can see, there’s gopher wire, mesh protecting the root balls from the gophers, from eating the plants.
So, the gopher wire mash will help protect from gophers and moles eating the roots . As you can see, it’s a barrier between the roots an she soil. The roots will be able to grow through the mesh, but the gophers won’t be able to eat the core of the roots of the plant therefore, ensuring the survival of the plants.
It’s been a major problem in Santa Barbara with gopher’s mall’s and other rodents and critters, because or through that lasted approximately 6 years. It’s forced all the animals to migrate towards the coast and residential, commercial areas, where there’s irrigation happening at the landscapes. They want to drink water just to survive, they need water as well and as the hills in Santa Barbara dry up, especially during the late spring and summer. That’s when the major gopher, mole infestation occurs.
So it’s really important to use gopher wire, mesh to protect your plants, trees and lawn each and every time you install a landscape. And even you don’t have any gopher or mols problems, you will as soon, as you start installing plants, you start watering them regularly, they will be attracted to the water and the roots. So, they can survive and eat.
