How to spruce up your landscape, even if your budget is tight

There is nothing like a tidy landscape to inspire in us a pride of ownership.  How our homes are viewed from the outside are, in our minds, a reflection of what is inside, and therefore it is the landscaping that we often address first when we look to improve our properties.  If you’re planning sell or just want to keep up with the neighbors, improving your home’s curb appeal can seem daunting, especially if you are on a budget.

Fortunately, there are a number of ways to help out your landscape without spending too much (or any) money.

1. Fresh mulch.  When you’re done with the weeds, consider mulching to really even out the look of your beds and slow the return of those weeds going forward. There are a number of types of mulch, all at different price points.  Most garden centers will compete for sales by discounting mulch during springtime when mulching is most common.

2. Weeds.  Depending on how you approach it, you can remove unsightly weeds for as little as free or as much as the cost of a bottle of weed killer.  It costs nothing but time to pull weeds by hand, which is a great and safe (not to mention satisfying) way to eliminate them right away.  But if your property is larger or you’re not up for the grueling work, you can try a spray bottle of herbicide.  Be sure to ask at your garden center which one is best for the type of weeds you have.

FRONT YARD LANDSCAPING – SANTA BARBARA

A home’s front yard gardens is the first impression it gives to the rest of the world passing by.  Attractive landscaping can improve property values and enhance its residents’ pride of ownership.  However, taking care of even simple front yard landscaping can be laborious for the do-it-yourselfer and may end up detracting from the look of the home.

3. Reuse, recycle, and repurpose.  Perhaps you’re looking to add a focal point to your garden beds, but gazing balls and small fountains and too expensive.  Consider creating your own with materials you may already have.  An old ladder might serve as a display for seasonal items (think pumpkins in the fall, etc.), or if you’re a creative type, a cool sculpture could be built out of almost anything as long as you use weather-resistant materials. Bald tires, empty cans, and old pottery can be made into bright planters and bird baths.

4. Edging. Trim up the lawn were it meets the beds, driveway, and pathways.  Doing this can go a long way in really neatening up the look of your overall landscape.

5. Bright additions. If the season is right, shop for plants in small containers (which are less expensive) that can grow into their space over time and provide added color and interest.

6. Boulders. Perhaps you know where you can get some large rocks to enhance your landscape.  If you can arrange delivery or get them to your house yourself, do so.  These are obviously easy to maintain but can really help enhance the look of your garden beds.

No matter how you upgrade your property, keep in mind the possibility of bringing a landscape maintenance professional on board.  Services can be tailored to fit almost any budget.
