Earth, Wind, and Fire: The Season of Santa Ana Winds

When you’re designing your landscape or even looking for a new home, you may want to consider if adding new trees should be a part of your plan.  Purchasing and installing trees might be pricey, but trees can bring great value to your home, whether you plan to sell in the near future or stay a while.

  1. Trees benefit the environment, even the one right around your home. The shade of large trees can help regulate temperatures inside the home, particularly on hot, sunny days.  And this of course means lower cooling bills.  Trees also have root systems that stabilize soils and take up extra moisture that might prevent ponding (and mosquitoes!) in your yard, not to mention flooding and excessive runoff to adjacent properties.  This is not to say that trees are completely full-proof additions to the landscape, but when planted properly and an appropriate distance from buildings (think mature canopy width), trees can be a sustainable and environmentally responsible addition to your landscape.
  2. Trees improve the aesthetic. Of course, we know that trees look nice and can really improve the look of a property.  But it is actual fact that trees can raise the resale value of a home.  Larger, more mature trees in particular, add a sense of stability and communicate to would-be buyers that a home and its landscape have been well cared for.  Consider what you might look for if you were viewing your home for the first time.  If the landscape looks a little barren, adding a fast-growing tree might be the answer.
  3. Trees provide white noise. An often-overlooked benefit of trees is their ability to buffer sounds, replacing them with the soft rustle of leaves as the wind blow.  If noise has been bothersome in your area, whether from cars, loud radios, or other nearby disturbances, consider planting trees where their height might help interrupt those sound waves.
